Following consultation with residents and the return of numerous surveys, Greg, Doreen, and Bob have written in their capacity as North Heaton ward councillors to recommend to the Planning Department that the council should include Heaton in the proposed new Area of Housing Mix policy. The area covered would include the parts of Heaton between Heaton Rd and Chillingham Road, and south of Sackville Rd to the railway.
Inclusion of the Heaton area has been subject to consultation over plans to create an AHM to control the proliferation of student rented properties in family residential areas. Many local residents are unhappy at the change in nature of areas such as Jesmond, Spital Tongues, and Sandyford and the new policy is aimed to place restrictions on converting existing homes to student multi-occupancy rented properties.
Greg says "99% of the responses were strongly in favour and we have written to the Head of Planning to pass on this strong endorsement. Residents are very keen to see action on this front after Labour failed to do anything about the issue. The council is also proposing a code of conduct for landlords over use of to let boards"
"Bizarrely Labour councillors are opposing this policy despite the views of the local community. It shows they have lost touch with the views of local people here".
