At the local elections held on May 3rd, Lib Dem candidate Karen Robinson was elected as the new ward councillor replacing retiring councillor Bob Jackman. The Lib Dem team - Greg, Doreen, and Karen - were delighted with the result which saw Karen secure a majority of 1036. The Lib Dem vote went up from 50% to 56%, with the votes for Labour, Conservatives, and Greens falling.
We were however very disappointed that our colleagues in South Heaton ward - Henry Gallagher and Ed Davies - failed narrowly to get elected, falling 55 votes short. We will keep up the fight in South Heaton to give local people a better deal.
Citywide, the Lib Dems retained comfortable control of the city council with 46 councillors to Labour's 32. The Lib Dems defeated the Labour leader in Newburn, gained a seat in Lemington, and narrowly failed to add another councillor in Fenham by just 4 votes after a recount.
