Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman for Newcastle East Greg Stone has issued a cool response to Government suggestions that it is considering the introduction of a "no fee" degree whereby students would not have to pay tuition fees if they waived their right to claim financial support through grants and loans.
The Lib Dems are the only party opposing tuition fees on principle, but Greg Stone has raised concerns that this new proposal may be little more than a gimmick. He has raised particular objections on the grounds that the "no fee" degree would in effect be a subsidy to students from wealthier families who do not currently need to resort to student loans.
Greg Stone said "I am opposed to tuition fees but am not sure that this proposal is the answer, as it raises concerns about 'university on the cheap' and 'second-class degrees'. I agree with students that they should be able to choose the course that is right for them at the university that is right for them, and that there should not be a two-tier system"
