Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesman for Newcastle East Greg Stone has vowed to continue to fight for the interests of retired Northumbria Police officers who have seen the Labour controlled Northumbria Police Authority introduce changes to disability pension entitlement for injuries sustained in the course of their duties.
A number of retired officers have seen their entitlement fall significantly as a result of this change, which other police authorities including Durham and the Metropolitan Police have chosen not to implement.
Greg Stone has been assisting a number of affected pensioners on this matter, and is deeply concerned over correspondence received from Northumbria Police Authority which suggests that pensioners who have sought to invoke their right to a medical assessment appeal will be pursued for costs of several thousand pounds if not successful. The letter goes on to state that the appeals have little chance of success.
Greg Stone said "I am less than impressed with the Police Authority's handling of this whole matter. Police officers who have had to retire as a result of their injuries have been hit by an arbitrary change in rules which Northumbria has applied yet other police forces have rejected.
"Now, pensioners seeking to appeal against a significant drop in their income are receiving threatening letters from the police authority which in my view are designed to get them to drop their case and are potentially prejudicial to their appeals. I am seeking urgent legal clarification of their position".
