Greg backs the bid for 2018 World Cup

July 14, 2009 1:15 PM

Newcastle East Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesman Greg Stone is backing the Newcastle-Gateshead bid to be one of the host cities for the England 2018 World Cup bid prospectus.

2018 logoIf successful, the proposal would see St James Park used as a venue for four World Cup qualifying team games, with facilities at Little Benton in Newcastle East along with Kingston Park and Gateshead Stadium used as team training locations and Exhibition Park used as a "fan park" during the tournament. The Lib Dem city council is playing a leading role in developing the bid along with Gateshead and NGI.

Greg Stone said "I have fond memories of Euro 96 at St James Park and it would be fantastic for Newcastle-Gateshead to secure this honour if England is successful with its 2018 bid. I am urging Newcastle East residents and football fans to get behind the bid by supporting Newcastle-Gateshead on the online England 2018 site"
