Responding to an angry outburst by Labour MP Nick Brown over the Government's failure to award PFI funding for a major refurbishment of the Grade II listed Byker estate, Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesman Greg Stone has expressed disappointment that the MP has chosen to play politics over this important matter.
He said "It is very disappointing that Nick Brown is trying to pass the buck on this issue given that the assessors of the bid were very complimentary about the major proposals put forward by the city council and Your Homes Newcastle. Ultimately the reason this bid has not succeeded is because the Labour government has simply run out of cash"
He added "I and my Lib Dem colleagues will continue to work hard to identify new avenues for funding the much needed refurbishment of Byker in line with the Erskine masterplan, but achieving important new upgrades in terms of sustainability. Rather than trying to play politics on this matter, Nick Brown needs to explain why despite his role as Minister for the North East and a close ally of Gordon Brown, he has failed to secure this vital investment for Newcastle East tenants."
