Byker arts and community centre Lottery bid backed

October 1, 2009 12:10 PM

Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesman for Newcastle East Greg Stone has backed efforts by Aspire, a network of volunteers in the Ouseburn Valley and Byker area of the constituency to support the development of a new arts and community facility at the disused St Michaels Church, which stands proudly overlooking the city at Headlam Street in the midst of the Byker estate.

Greg said "The history of Byker and its community and social fabric are a hugely important part of the identity of the East End, and its transformation over time has created a huge amount of change but also a huge amount of creativity. I warmly welcome the Lottery bid to bring St Michaels Church back into reuse and I am hugely encouraged by the plans for landscaping and public use as a community and arts venue."

"I am looking forward to visiting the Changing Byker photographic exhibition and am also looking forward to taking part in other activities in the Reinventing the City season, including Amber Films retrospective at the Side Cinema this weekend."
