The Government have announced they are to change the rules on concessionary travel funding to take money away from some councils. A previous change to the system led to a major shortfall for Tyne & Wear authorities, leading to some subsidised services being cut by the Labour controlled transport authority.

Greg Stone said "The Government's record on implementing concessionary travel has been marked by significant problems in allocating funding leading many authorities short-changed. I want the Tyne Wear transport authority to scrutinise these new proposals carefully and I will oppose any changes which leave Newcastle worse off"
