Prospective MP for Newcastle East Greg Stone has hailed the news that Newcastle has been named by influential sustainability group Forum for the Future as the UK's most sustainable city as a significant endorsement for the Lib Dem council administration's focus on green issues.
The city has overtaken the UK's best known "green" city, Brighton, to take the top spot in the annual rankings which assess performance on issues like climate change, recycling, transport, and quality of life, and demonstrates the significant progress made on sustainability by the Lib Dem council since taking control in 2004. Newcastle has risen from 8th in the rankings in 2007 to 4th in 2008 to 1st in 2009.
Greg Stone said "It is really encouraging that Jonathan Porrit and the Forum for the Future organisation, who are widely regarded as being the most influential sustainability group in the country, have recognised the good work being done in Lib Dems in Newcastle on recycling, on electric vehicles, on home insulation, and on sustainable procurement. However, we're not complacent and want to go even further in future to make Newcastle one of the greenest cities not just in the UK but in Europe as well."
