Greg joins The Wave for action on climate change at Copenhagen

December 4, 2009 1:24 PM

CopenhagenGreg Stone, Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman for Newcastle East is to join Nick Clegg, Simon Hughes, and other Lib Dem MPs and activists on The Wave march and rally to call for action at the Copenhagen summit on climate change.

The biggest ever climate change demonstration in UK history will take place tomorrow as tens of thousands of people flood into London to march in The Wave and call for the Government to take much more urgent and effective action.

People from all over the country will dress in blue and march from Grosvenor Square to Big Ben, calling on the UK government to settle for nothing less than a climate deal in Copenhagen that avoids dangerous climate change and protects the world's poorest who are already feeling its effects.

And they will appeal to the UK government to increase its targets, which still fall far too short. Its current ambition for an EU-wide emissions cut of 30 per cent within the next ten years would at best only give us a 50/50 chance staying below the global warming danger level of 2 degrees C.

The event comes two days before the crucial UN climate talks begin in the Danish capital, where a climate deal must be made to tackle the biggest crisis the world has ever faced.

Greg Stone said "I am proud to attend The Wave on behalf of Newcastle, which was recently named the UK's most sustainable city thanks to the policies being pursued by the Lib Dem city council administration.

The Liberal Democrats will use this opportunity to highlight our environmental credentials - and reassert our position as the leading party on climate change.

We are the party that will go furthest on cutting carbon emissions, generating renewable energy, insulating homes, and reducing emissions from transport.

The Liberal Democrats want to make Britain carbon neutral by 2050 - and by 2020 will have brought our emissions down to the level scientists say will stop climate change. Only the Lib Dems can offer real change on the environment"
